What Is Player Load Monitoring in Elite Sport
Definition: Player load monitoring is the systematic tracking of physical and physiological stress placed on elite athletes across training sessions and matches. Its purpose is to ensure athletes are exposed to sufficient training stimulus to develop and maintain performance, while managing the cumulative load that increases injury risk.
Player load is measured across multiple data sources in elite sport. GPS devices worn during training and matches capture external load metrics including total distance, high-speed running distance, sprint count, acceleration and deceleration events, and positional movement patterns. Heart rate monitors capture internal load — the physiological cost of that physical output. Force plate and strength testing systems capture neuromuscular fatigue and readiness. Wearable devices capture recovery quality through sleep, heart rate variability, and strain metrics.
The key challenge in player load monitoring is not collecting this data — most elite teams already have multiple systems producing load data. The challenge is consolidating it. When GPS data sits in one platform, strength data in another, and wellness surveys in a third, analysts cannot easily view an athlete's complete load picture. Insights are fragmented. Risk signals can be missed.
Axon Perform centralises player load data from all connected source systems — including Catapult and STATSports for GPS, VALD for strength and neuromuscular data, and Whoop, Garmin, and Apple Health for wearable recovery data — into a single Power BI dashboard. Automated calculations apply ACWR (Acute:Chronic Workload Ratio), Z-scores, standard deviation, and STEN scores consistently across all athletes and sessions.
The result is a single, always-current view of where each athlete sits relative to their own baseline and relative to positional and squad norms — enabling S&C coaches, physiotherapists, and performance staff to make readiness and selection decisions with confidence.
Axon Perform is the high performance data intelligence platform for elite sports organisations. Built on Snowflake with Power BI reporting, Axon centralises GPS, strength, wearable, and game analytics data into a single bespoke system. Clients own their data, their warehouse, and their IP outright.
