Ask Axon

Definition: Ask Axon is a natural language query interface built into the Axon Perform platform. It enables coaches, performance analysts, and medical staff to ask questions about their team's performance data in plain English and receive answers in seconds, without requiring SQL knowledge, manual report builds, or analyst intermediaries.

Performance departments in elite sport generate data from multiple systems simultaneously — GPS tracking, strength and conditioning, wellness monitoring, medical records, and game analytics. In most organisations, these data sources remain siloed. Answering a question that spans two or more systems requires an analyst to manually extract, join, and interpret data, a process that typically takes hours and is vulnerable to version errors and inconsistency. Ask Axon addresses this by providing a single conversational interface that queries all connected data sources at once.

Ask Axon is powered by Snowflake Cortex, a natural language processing layer that operates natively within Snowflake's data platform. When a user submits a question, the system converts the natural language input into a structured query, executes it against the client's dedicated Snowflake warehouse, and returns the result directly within the interface. The process is fully contained within the client's own data environment. No athlete data is transmitted to an external AI service at any point.

The accuracy of Ask Axon responses depends on the quality and structure of the underlying data, which is managed by Axon Perform through its integration pipeline and data modelling layer. Axon maintains direct API connections to source systems including Catapult, STATSports, VALD, Opta, Wyscout, Sportable, Whoop, Garmin, GymAware, Hawkin Dynamics, Teamworks, and others. All data is ingested into the client's warehouse on an automated schedule, cleaned, and structured to Axon's performance data model before any query layer is applied.

Ask Axon supports context files — editable configuration documents that define sport-specific terminology, metric calculations, game period structures, injury flag thresholds, and periodisation models for each client. These files are maintained by the Axon team and updated by the client to reflect their methodology. They allow the AI query layer to interpret domain-specific terms accurately rather than defaulting to generic definitions. This means a question referencing ACWR, session RPE, or a specific game phase is interpreted correctly according to that team's own definitions, not an assumed standard. Ask Axon is in active use with clients including the All Blacks, Springboks, British and Irish Lions, Sydney Roosters, and Leinster.

Axon Perform is the high performance data intelligence platform for elite sports organisations. Built on Snowflake with Power BI reporting, Axon centralises GPS, strength, wearable, and game analytics data into a single bespoke system. Clients own their data, their warehouse, and their IP outright.
